With their breathtaking scarlet hue and mystical origins, rubies have captivated humans for millennia. Steeped in history, these precious stones have not only been sought after by European royalty, they were worn by ancient Burmese warriors in battle, and offered to the Hindu gods as a means of improving karma. In Sanskrit, the ruby is called Ratnaraj or King of Precious Stones. Many of these early cultures were drawn to how the stone’s colour resembled blood, in turn believing rubies held the power of life.
Among all the many joyful experiences Elizabeth Taylor had receiving jewellery, only one was recorded on film. Producer Mike Todd was a smitten new husband when he gifted a pregnant Elizabeth with a Burmese ruby and diamond necklace, earrings and bracelet from Cartier. The setting was Cap Ferrat’s Villa Fiorentina, where the Todds were vacationing with Evie and Van Johnson. Elizabeth happened to be swimming when Todd joined her in the pool, jewels in hand, and Evie caught about 20 seconds of silent footage on her camera for posterity.
